School Number One

School Number One

School Number One, on Sixth Avenue near the corner of Second Street, was erected in 1877, and became known as Washington School.  Below is the new Joseph Wood Auditorium and in the background the new Washington Junior High School built in 1932.  It was the home of the Westchester Symphony and hosted 1936 and 1938 sold-out performances by Marian Anderson. The entire complex is fronted on South Sixth Avenue and Second Street. Today it was called Nellie Thornton School and now the Denzel Washington School for the Performing Arts.
