Betty Shabazz House

Dr. Betty Shabazz and Malcolm X’s six daughters —grew up in a house on East Fifth Street. Her daughter’s autobiography, Growing Up X, after her father’s death, Betty worked hard to ensure that they were well provided for.  She writes that her mother got help from close friends to acquire a “large, beautiful home” in Mount Vernon.  Dr. Shabazz was beloved for her sense of optimism.  One of her favorite phrases was “find the good and praise it!”
